PENAMPANG: Two people died in a road accident involving three vehicles near the Water Festival site in Meruntum, Jalan KKapar, on Saturday afternoon.

Chai Siew Ming, 28, the passenger of an Isuzu Lavender, died on the spot while its driver, Chai Lui Kiong, 20, was pronounced dead at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The two other vehicles involved were a Toyota Vios and a van, of which both drivers escaped unhurt.

Penampang district police chief Deputy Superintendent Rosley Hobden said in the 4.45pm incident, all three vehicles were travelling on the same direction from Kota Kinabalu heading towards Papar.

It was believed that the Isuzu Lavender which was on the left lane, had rammed the van in front of it in the middle lane before it spun, hitting the right side of the Toyota Vios.

While the Toyota Vios swirled and ended up facing the opposite direction, the Isuzu Lavender lost control and hit the road divider, skidded to the opposite lane and overturned to its side.

Siew Ming was thrown out of the vehicle and died on the spot.

Rosley said the incident was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
