KUCHING: A total of 370 saplings of various species were planted by The Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers (Sabati) at Taman Tabuan Tranquility (renamed Taman Tranquility Sabati), Lorong Setia Raja, Kuching.

They were assisted by Kuching South City Council (MBK), government agencies as well as private developer Ibraco Berhad.

Tree-planting programme by Sabati was started by their former president, the late Datin Patinggi Laila Taib, and due to the impact, the activity has been maintained until today and is on the calender events for Sabati.

The government encourages tree-planting in gardens and children’s playground in housing estates of urban areas.

“It is an effective method to ensure harmony in the community,” said Sabati president Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu who is wife of the chief minister at the event held at Tranquility Park here yesterday.

“When Sabati tried to identify a suitable location for the tree-planting programme in Kuching City South, Mayor Datuk James Chan Kay Syn  suggested housing areas,” Jamilah recalled.

She reminded the public to keep the park clean and maintain its equipment to accommodate its users.

Chan said the provision for open space at Tranquility Park would benefit communities living nearby by promoting interaction and communication to ensure social harmony.

“Formerly under the care of developer Ibraco Berhad, the park had been recently handed over to MBKS.

“As a tribute to Sabati for its efforts in promoting our green environment, the park has been renamed Taman Tranquility Sabati,’’ he said.

Chan disclosed that old equipment at the children’s playground in the park had been repaired or replaced. There is now an area for senior citizens to exercise.

“I’m very happy that Ibraco not only equipped the children’s playground but provided recreational areas for older users, including reflexology path for low-impact exercise to promote balance and flexibility,” he said.

Chan called for people to be civic-minded, preserve the place and avoid unhealthy activities and vandalism,” he said.

Present were Sabati deputy president Datin Amar Doreen Mayang Unggah, Deputy State Commissioner of Police Dato ‘Abdul Aziz Yusof, Sabati Dato Dayang Morliah Datuk Awang Daud, Sabati sub-committee chairman for Sports, Culture and Recreation Dato Fatimah Mohd Iskandar and members of the association.
