MIRI: Petanque is a sport worthy to be developed for its tourism potential.

Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin said this when closing the 7th Borneo Inter-club Petanque Championship and 6th Borneo Cup Petanque Championship yesterday.

The twin event attracted a record total of 160 players representing 128 teams from all over Borneo.

Lee said it was proven that the sport has becoming increasingly popular among the people.

“With these participants coming in, especially from Kalimantan, Brunei and Sabah, it would in a way promote our tourism here, “ he added.

The sport, he advised, could be further developed in schools and villages as it is cheap and easy to play.

It is not so physically taxing so the older generation can also take part.

Meanwhile, this year’s Borneo Inter-club title went to Team Saratok 2 who walked home RM3,000 richer.

Second place was Team DBKU while Team Poyut Son 1 finished third.
