KUCHING: Two men accused of committing bribery were each sentenced to a six-month jail and a fine of RM10,000 by the Sessions Court here yesterday.

Judge Nixon Keneddy Kumbong imposed the sentence on Eddie Sakang Chenangga and Mail Sambau after the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the two were guilty under Section 17(b) of

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, punishable under Section 24 of the same Act read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

It is reported that Eddie and Mail had, on Oct 12 last year at 4.30am in Betong, offered bribes to a policeman as an inducement to not take any legal action against them for transporting 21 Indonesians – all of whom were without any legal travel documentation – on board a van.

This was an offence under the Immigration Regulations.

The Sessions Court, however, granted a stay of execution for Eddie and Mail pending their appeal to the High Court, under which each of the accused was released on RM50,000 court bail with two sureties who are Kuching residents.

Nevertheless, the two accused were ordered to pay the RM10,000 fine each immediately.
