LAHAD DATU: A 50-year-old farm keeper has been detained after police found the information he provided regarding the discovery of a firearm and ammunition suspicious.

The police reportedly found the said items in a farm at Kampung Pasusul, near here about 8 am on Saturday, following information received from the public.

One M16 firearm complete with a magazine, 14 empty magazines, a plastic bottle filled with bullets and two unidentified hand bombs were found by the police.

According to the farm keeper, he found the items scattered on the ground about a month ago while clearing the area for farming. He then cleaned the firearms with oil before wrapping them properly and hiding the items in the bushes at the farm.

The farm keeper also admitted that he had tried to see if the firearm was functional but the ammunition, according to him, could not fit into the chamber.

He was then detained as there were doubts in the initial information he provided. He also failed to report the matter to the police immediately after discovering the firearms a month ago.

Apart from that, the grease found on the item also indicated that it was well kept.
