2U2I aims to increase working ability among fresh grads

GEORGE TOWN: Students can now undertake the new 2U2I (2 year university + 2 year Industry) programme that is available at certain universities nationwide aimed to increase working ability among fresh graduates.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap Kian Ching said that it is important for universities to collaborate with the industries to have capable graduates entering the work market.

“This programme is part of the Higher Education blueprint and has been implemented since this September,” she told a press conference after officiating at the third knowledge transfer seminar here yesterday.

Currently, there are five universities nationwide, namely University Putra Malaysia (UPM); Univeristi Malaysia Kelantan (UMK); Universiti Islam Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA); Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM); and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) that offer the 2U2I for certain programmes.

Meanwhile, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Asma Ismail said that APEX university is planning to start their 2U2I programme by next year after several procedures had been completed.

“Several programmes that we are planning to opt for the 2U2I programme are engineering and accountancy. However, before we could implement it, we must wait for the Malaysian Qualifier Register (MQA) to approve it,” she said.

Themed ‘Lifelong Learning Through Knowledge Transfer for Nation Capacity Building’ 150 participants comprising academia and trained graduates would present over 100 papers during the two-day seminar. — Bernama
