KUCHING: Darts is a sport with good tourism potential, said Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.
He also hopes to see more world-class darters coming Sarawak’s way.
He made these remarks at the launch of the inaugural Kuching City International Darts Championship held at Riverside Majestic Shopping Mall yesterday.
“We try our best to encourage sports tourism as DBKU’s effort. We want tourists who come here not just to enjoy the city but also to do sports. Some of them may come with their families and darts is a sport that can be played by the whole family.”
The event is a World Dart Federation-sanctioned tournament in which players can earn international ranking points.
Starting yesterday until Sunday, it offers total prize money of RM40,000.
Five of the 58 competing teams are from other countries, one each from India and Singapore and three from Brunei.
Yesterday was the qualifying round for the team event, followed by the knock-out round today and the men/women’s singles on Sunday.
