KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Central Youth secretary David Ong has urged Bagan Umno dvision chief Hamidah Arshad to bring solution and not problem to the Barisan Nasional (BN).

“Do not take the racial harmony for granted.  Whether you are from a Malay party, Chinese party, Indian party or multiracial party, we are obliged to serve all races,” Ong said in a statement yesterday.

During the Umno general assembly, Wanita delegate Hamidah had questioned the government for appointing non-Malays to top positions in government-linked companies and Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan had warned the Chinese of a possible backlash if they continued to shun BN.

“Position should be given based on performance and competency.  It has not got anything to do with races.  Please do not seek to contravene the vision of 1Malayisia initiated by Prime Minister.

“What proof does Khairul Azwan has which he claimed Chinese are not supporting the government?  Didn’t the last Sarawak State election and the two by-elections in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar showed the return of Chinese votes?  Even our Deputy Prime Minister thanked the Chinese voters who have returned to support BN,” said Ong.

“Article 12(1) of our Constitution stated that there shall be no discrimination against any citizen on the grounds only of religion, race, descent or place of birth.  Every citizen has the right to good education and deserves public authority financial aid. Thus please do not undermine Chinese education and politicize it,” he added.

Ong said our country is facing great challenges with rising national debts and falling value of Ringgit.  Government debts can quickly become a burden on the economy and weaken the foundation.

“Shouldn’t we put more focus on sound macro economic policies, enhance credibility of the government and strengthen political institution rather than stirring racial sentiment which can only weaken national unity?”

Hamidah had pointed out that there are other qualified Malay professionals who could have easily filled the positions in GLCs.

“When top positions are filled by other races, the effect is that opportunities for contractors, consultants and lawyers are all given to them (their community).

“GLCs belong to us, but why are we giving them (top positions) away to other races? Who will help our own race? Whose fault is this? It’s ours,” she said at the Umno general assembly on Wednesday.
