BETONG: A woman was killed while two other people were injured after the four-wheel drive vehicle (4WD) that they were travelling on crashed into a ditch at KM52 of Sri Aman-Sarikei Road early yesterday.

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department acting chief ASP Matthew Manggie said based on initial investigation on the 1.30am incident, the driver who is the woman’s husband might have lost control of the 4WD after the rear tyre burst.

It is believed that the three were on their way to Serian town at the time.

“The impact caused the vehicle to spin out of control on the road before crashing into a ditch by the roadside,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The woman is said to be from Tanjung Kidurong in Bintulu and she was the front seat passenger.

She and her husband – both 57 – and their six-year-old granddaughter were rushed to Betong Hospital soon after the paramedics arrived at the site of the crash.

However, the woman was pronounced dead not long after she was taken into the hospital’s accident and emergency unit.

Her husband suffered a broken shoulder and injuries on his face, while the girl sustained leg injuries. Both of them are still undergoing treatment at Betong Hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of Road Transport Act 1987.
