KUCHING: Icom Square Management Sdn Bhd has assured that it is looking into concerns that illegal motorcycle racers (Mat Rempits) were often seen loitering around the square’s fountain almost every night.

Its executive Janet Tok Wui Yung said the management was fully aware of the issue which was constantly raised by concerned citizens on Facebook.

“We are also working closely with the police who are conducting periodic checks and have always acted promptly to our distress call when the Mat Rempits start to act rowdy,” said Tok at a press conference in their office yesterday.

She hoped that other agencies such as the National Anti-Drugs Agency, Road Transport Department and Jabatan Agama Islam Sarawak would conduct a joint operation to round up the suspected bad hats in the area.

She said the Mat Rempits would start to loiter and consume alcohol in the area from 9.30pm onwards until the wee hours of around 3am to 4am almost on a daily basis.

“We have also received reports that when the police make their rounds, the Mat Rempits would scatter. When they know that the police have left the area, they would then return and continue on with their drinking activities,” she added.

Besides the close cooperation with the police, Tok further assured that their security personnel were working round the clock to safeguard the area to ensure safety for their patrons and tenants.

“We have our own security, so do not worry,” said Tok.

Being part of Kuching’s growing food attraction, every effort would be carried out to ensure the square remain attractive to locals and tourists, she added.

In addition, she revealed that the management had plans to install speed bumps in designated locations and upgrade the area by installing fencings at certain parts of the square in the near future.

On another matter, she said Icom Square will host the Zombie Run on Jan 14 next year, which is expected to attract at least 10,000 ‘zombie’ runners to the annual event.
