BINTULU: Radio frequency (RF) radiation emitted by Sacofa Sdn Bhd’s telecommunication structures in Sibu, Bintulu and Kuching are well below exposure limits.

Malaysian Nuclear Agency Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR) Health and Safety Department manager Roha Tukimin said RF radiation measured from three telecommunication structures complied with International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) mandatory standards for the public.

Roha said Sacofa appointed the agency to conduct RF radiation measurements on Nov 21-23 on telecommunication structures at Taman Harmoni (Sibu), Taman Jade (Bintulu) and Taman Layang-Layang (Kuching).

“The measurements were requested with the aim to know the level of RF radiation emitted from these telecommunication structures,” she said when presenting a public awareness talk on RF and electromagnet field (EMF) conducted by Sacofa yesterday.

She said members of the public were concerned about RF radiation on their health as the structures were erected near housing, school and commercial areas.

Based on the findings of this assessment, Roha said the levels of RF radiation would not lead to any significant radiation exposure.

“Periodic RF assessment should be done at least once in two years to ensure RF compliance with permissible exposure limits.

“RF radiation assessment must be done during the commissioning of new equipment or any modification on the existing equipment,” she added.

She said RF radiation safety assessments would also be carried out on two other telecommunication structures in Pasir Panas, Sri Aman and Pujut, Miri.
