SIBU: The state boys and girls teams are approaching the 16th Milo-Malaysia Youth Under-14 Volleyball Championship with confidence.

The tournament, the first Malaysia Volleyball Association (Mava) national championship in Sarawak in more than 10 years, will be held at Sibu Volleyball Indoor Stadium, Rejang Park here from today (Dec 7) to Dec 10.

According to the state chief coach, Dato’ Moh Wung Ming, the performance of his players have improved since the last championship staged in Pahang.

“We feel our teams can do better in this championship. We are also counting on the home ground advantage with local supporters,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Also present was the president of Sibu Volleyball Association Dr William Ting Wee Ung.

Last year, Sarawak finished third in both categories.

Selangor and Kuala Lumpur boys were champions and runners-up.

For the Girls category, Selangor was first and Johor second.

This year’s championship will see eight boys teams representing Selangor, Johor, Kelantan, Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Penang and Sarawak.

There are six teams vying for the girl’s title including Sarawak.

Moh, who is also the organising chairman, said the opening ceremony-cum-welcoming dinner would be this evening at Paramount Hotel. Mava vice –president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming, who is also Sarawak Volleyball Association president will grace the occasion. The first match would have started at 8.30am.

Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will officiate at the closing ceremony on Dec 10 at 8pm.
