KUCHING: Art gallery Galleria will present its annual exhibition themed ‘Cultural Splendour 2016’ from tomorrow (Dec 9) until Jan 8.
A press release said the theme was chosen “with the hope of bringing to light and exposing the perceptions of participating artists and visitors related to ideas, customs, and social behaviour of their respective societies”.
The works will display the diverse backgrounds of the 22 participating artists, “a reflection of all the wonderful and beautiful cultural varieties and differences found in all societies and communities throughout Malaysia, specifically Sarawak”.
Galleria hopes the participating artists can project the lifestyles, beliefs and practices of diverse people working together to advance certain cultural goals and the endless process of change involved.
“This exhibition would undoubtedly provide the venue for cultural pluralism to be exposed by providing a condition in which some minority group can fully participate in dominant society, yet maintain their cultural differences.
“Sarawak’s diverse population offers a distinctive cultural experience, with underlying tropes and traditions taking on new life and interpretations within each individual community and society’s unique historic and contemporary context,” added the statement.
