Tanjung Offshore pursues business expansion in aerospace

KUCHING: T7 Aero Sdn Bhd (T7 Aero), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tanjung Offshore Berhad (Tanjung Offshore) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kilgour Metal Treatments Ltd (Kilgour) in respect of a desired collaboration in pursuing business opportunities in metal treatments in Malaysia.

Under the MoU, Tanjung Offshore and Kilgour will explore the building, operation and setup of a metal treatment plant in Malaysia as part of their diversification into high value manufacturing.

The proposed metal treatment plant will carry out metal surface treatment, chemical processing, NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) activities and coating applications specialising in the aerospace industry.

Kilgour, a subsidiary of Kilgour Aerospace Specialists Ltd, is a manufacturer of complex aerospace components and metal treatment specialist with over 50 years of experience in the UK. The group is confident that it can leverage on Kilgour’s in depth experience and capabilities in developing new talent, which meets the industry requirements.

The ceremony was held earlier yesterday at Kuala Lumpur International Aerospace Business Convention, Kuala Lumpur, where the MOU was exchanged by Tan Kay Vin, executive director of T7 Aero Sdn Bhd and Tony Collingridge Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire from Department for International Trade of the UK representing Kilgour Aerospace Specialists Ltd.

Also present during the ceremony were Malaysia Aerospace Industry Association president Naguib Mohd Nor, Matrade chief executive officer Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud,  Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry Datuk Ahmad Maslan, Matrade chairman Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad, and Tanjung Offshore group chief executive officer  Rahmanudin Md Shamsudin.

This partnership aims to provide metal finishing treatment services for both the export and domestic market in Malaysia. This Collaboration is also an avenue for Tanjung Offshore to upscale its engineering services into the aerospace industry and for Kilgour to expand its footprint into South East Asia.

Other topics of collaboration include market development, technology transfer and technology acquisition planning, human capital development programmes, research and development opportunities and other related areas to become an integral part of the Malaysian Aerospace Industry ecosystem.

Tanjung Offshore’s plans to venture into the aerospace industry is part of its long-term strategy to upscale their existing oil and gas engineering business diversifying towards aerospace.

The group views aerospace as an entry point into high value industry with great potential, especially with the emergence of the fourth Industrial Revolution.

This is the next phase of manufacturing which concentrates on the end-to-end digitisation of all physical assets and their integration into digital ecosystems with value chain partners. The group seeks to be an early mover to leverage on the 4th Industrial Revolution.
