SIBU: Malaysian Volleyball Association (MAVA) has to bear a heavy cost in preparing the national teams for the Southeast Asia Games (SEA Games) in Kuala Lumpur next year.

Speaking at the 16th Milo Malaysia Youth (U14) Volleyball Championship 2016 opening dinner at Paramount Hotel on Wednesday night, president of MAVA Dr Gregory Hii said MAVA had sent their volleyball players for training since September last year.

“We already set the ball rolling for men’s team and ladies’ team; they had been training for more than a year already since September last year.

“It has already costing MAVA and National Sports Council (NSC) about RM300,000,” he said.

He said with such heavy expenses, MAVA had heavy responsibility to try its best to bring out the best from the players in the games.

Meanwhile, president of Sarawak Volleyball Association (SAVA) Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming praised the great efforts by MAVA, SAVA and Sibu Volleyball Association and all volleyball associations in promoting and encouraging the development of volleyball on the national level all these years.

“This event speaks for the commitment that all of us hold for the sports. It is the strong commitment to volleyball and to the development of our youth, is the reason why we have all gathered here,” he pointed out.

A total of 14 teams are taking part in the youth championship – eight boys’ team and six girls’ team.

The championship will end tomorrow.

Also present at the event was organising chairman for the championship game Dato Moh Wung Ming.
