Sabah edge Sarawak in inter-state derby

KUCHING: Sabah got the better of Sarawak again in their annual rivalry in the SGA Cup at Kelab Golf Sarawak yesterday when they beat their counterparts 18 1/2-17 1/2 points, the narrowest margin of wins since 2001.

This brought their wins in the annual tournament to 10 against Sarawak’s six.

The visitors led the first day of contest on Tuesday by scoring seven points to lead Sarawak by two points.

However, things were all even on the following day as both teams scored six points for a 1-1 draw.

Sabah maintained a two-point lead into the final day of competition which saw them score only 5 1/2 points against Sarawak’s 6 1/2 points.

Sarawak was represented by the Lee siblings of Ka Tung, Ka Ming, Ka Ching and Ka Tiong, Lau Ching Leong, Mohd Lokman Mustaffa, Johari Aman, John Ling, Aziel Teo, Malcolm Ting, Albert Goh and Lim Beng Kiat.

Carrying the Sabah challenge were Mohd Zariq Encho, Chua Poh Chuan, Hillary Tan, Albright Chong, Casper Loh, Safaruddin Abidin, Christopher James, Fazley Chua, Sheo Wei Meng, Alex Lau, Eldrick Chong and Mitchell Steel.

The three-day friendly showdown also witnessed three players scoring hole-in-one feat and they were Lim Beng Kiat at Matang Hole 3 on Dec 6, Brandon Lai at Matang Hole 8 on Dec 7 and Mohd Zariq Encho at Santubong Hole 17 yesterday.
