‘Almost all corruption arrests involve youths’

KUCHING: Nearly 96 per cent or 1,045 of the 1,092 individuals arrested for corruption nationwide from 2013 to October were youths aged 40 and below.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) statistics also showed youths made up 54 per cent of the 5,799 individuals arrested between 2003 and 2013 for corruption.

“It is important for our youths to be exposed and taught on how to eliminate corruption and abuse of power,” Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said when closing the two-day state-level International Anti-Corruption Day 2016 yesterday.

Nancy said combating corruption would require the participation of every level of society to create an anti-corruption culture among Malaysians.

She pointed out that MACC and the Ministry of Education had included anti-corruption elements in Primary 6 textbooks, while tertiary institutions had mooted anti-corruption secretariats.

Other initiatives to combat corruption were the Whistle Blowers Act 2010, 14 Sessions Courts specifically for corruption cases, and the Corruption Offenders Database, which currently contains 800 names, she said.

Nancy stressed that MACC operates ‘without fear or favour’ and nobody could direct or stop an MACC investigation.

She also commended the MACC for the arrests of suspects in the Sabah Water Department case in October.
