Wedding merriment turns tragic

LAWAS: The merriment of a wedding reception at Kampung Awat-Awat on Thursday night turned tragic when a man of unsound mind reportedly stabbed his relative inflicting a major wound on his stomach.

Lawas District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendant Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the suspect 52, had actually intended to harm the victim’s father, but the knife landed on the victim who was standing beside his father.

The victim was rushed to Lawas Hospital for treatment and later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu for further treatment. Abang Zainal said the suspect later tried to escape but was caught by the villagers and later handed to the police, who came shortly after being informed of the incident by the villagers.

“Police personnel from Sundar Police Station rushed to the scene upon being notified of the tragedy.

The suspect was later brought to Lawas Police Station for further action,” he said.

Police have yet to recover the knife used in the incident and the case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
