LIMBANG: Ten police personnel from this district are among 10,000 members of the force nationwide who are facing weight problems.

According to Limbang District police chief Supt Mohd Bukhori Saffai, the 10 personnel — including two women — will be sent to the police training centre (Pulapol) in Kuching to undergo a special ‘slim-down’ programme.

“The 10 police personnel are considered obese, and they will have to undergo the fitness programme in line with the ‘Trim and Fit Mission 2018’ – a target for Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to have 90 per cent of its personnel being fit and healthy to perform their duties by 2018,” he said yesterday.

Mohd Bukhori said at the same time all personnel from the district headquarters must take part in various fitness programmes held every Friday.

“I hope all members of the force would take ‘Trim and Fit’ mission seriously for the sake of their health and career.”

Last month, PDRM management director Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah said the force would start recording data to keep track of obese police personnel next year with the target of achieving the ‘Trim and Fit Mission 2018’.

Beginning Jan 1, 2018, he said PDRM would enforce the requirement for their personnel to pass a fitness test before receiving any promotion and confirmation.

Once the programme commenced, all police personnel would have to undergo the ‘Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation Set’, which had been adopted by many overseas police forces, including Canada and the United Nations.

So far, Zulkifli said some 10,000 police officers nationwide were facing weight problems, and he hoped that by 2018, 90 per cent of them would be fit.
