KUCHING: The Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) stands ready to help all states develop wushu and uplift their standard.

One of the ways will be through organising more coaching and judging courses so that wushu development can be done in a systematic and professional way.

“However, all the state associations must have a strong management with good leadership. I strongly believe that only the states that have good management and development programmes are those which produce excellent results,” said WFM development and selection committee chairman James Ting at the opening of the National Wushu Judges Training and Certification Course at a local hotel on Thursday night.

He noted that wushu, which is recognised by the government as a major sport and a compulsory Sukma event, has done very well in international competitions.

Wushu, he added, is now in good hands as WFM is now managed professionally and fairly.

“In my 40 more years involvement as a member in WFM, I have never seen a stronger management team such as the recent team,” said Ting, who is also the course facilitator and deputy president of the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS).

He also expressed satisfaction with the good response to the course. The majority of the participants are former and current athletes as well as coaches while some are existing judges who have come from all over the country to update their knowledge.

“With more qualified judges, we would be able to organise more taolu, sanshou, lion and dragon competitions,” he said.

WFM president Allen Wong who is also WFS president, said it was vital for coaches to also have knowledge in judging.

“You need to have judging knowledge because it not only help your athletes score points and avoid dropping points for committing the unnecessary errors,” he added.

The National Wushu Judges Training and Certification Course is the first of its kind to be organised in Sarawak and the five-day event is attended by 58 participants.

Lecturers for taolu are Yoong Thong Foong, Tan Ching Fung and Chong Min Fei while the lecturers for sanshou are Chin Khin Thong and Lee How Ching.
