KUCHING: A power outage that affected residents in Igan, Matu and Daro in Mukah was caused by an electricity pole that was damaged by a fallen tree.

Power supply to the areas was fully restored at 4.48am after works to replace the pole at Jalan Senau-Igan was completed early this morning.

According to a statement from Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), the electricity pole broke when a tree fell on the 33kV lines at around 5pm yesterday.

An on-site investigation found that there was land clearing activity in the area, believed to be for farming purposes, prior to the incident.

“The repair works took a while to complete because it was night. The new pole had to be installed manually as the damaged pole was located across a wide monsoon drain inaccessible by crane,” SEB regional manager for central region Hajah Peridah Samawi said in the statement.

“Nevertheless, the response team worked through the night to ensure restoration of supply to affected customers was done in the shortest time possible.

“To ensure safety and avoid unnecessary power disruption, we would like to advise members of the public to be careful at all times and avoid working too close to power lines and facilities as fallen live cables can cause electrocution,” she added.
