MIRI: Miri clinched the Sarawak Under-19 Youth Cup in emphatic style with a 3-0 victory over Sarikei in Friday’s final at Bintulu Stadium.

It was a historic triumph for a team who had only set the target of reaching the last four in the tournament.

Moreover, they had to endure tough group matches, first overcoming defending champion Kuching 3-0, suffered a 0-2 upset at the hands of Sri Aman before rebounding to a 4-0 win over Sarikei.

The team then survived the knock-out stage with narrow 1-0 wins over Betong in the quarter-final and Samarahan in the semi-final.

Miri Football Association president Mohamad Saif Jubaidi conceded that his team had luck on their side. But he was all praise for their coach and players.

“But I must praise our Miri head coach Mohd Hakimi Man and his team for continuing the winning momentum when being fiercely challenged by other teams,” he told thesundaypost.

The Miri players ensured that the result was never in doubt during the final. Amar Muaz Zamri scored in the 39th and 42nd minute before Rivaldo Adrill Wilson put the icing on the cake with a third goal in 53rd minute.

Prizes were presented to the winners by Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi.
