BANJARBARU: South Kalimantan Regional Police Chief (Kapolda) Brigadier General Erwin Triwanto ordered police personnel to visit and monitor security and order in prisons, AntaranewsKalsel reported.

“I have ordered police personnel to visit and monitor social order in the prison, so convicts escape not to happen again ,” he said in Banjarbaru, Tuesday.

His statement related to escape of 31 inmates from Class II Banjarbaru Prison on Sunday (25/12) morning. 28 inmates who had escaped were arrested and some surrendered.

Earlier on Tuesday, kapolda together with Head of South Kalimantan office of Ministry of Law and Human Rights Imam Suyudi visited Banjarbaru Prisons, two prisons in Martapura and one prison in Banjarmasin.

According to the police chief, excess capacity in all prisons and detention centers in South Kalimantan requires creativity and leadership to create a conducive situation and conditions.

On the other hand, the limitations of attendant and quite old infrastructure is prone to cause security problems inside and outside the prison environment.

“We are ready to help prison officials to create a situation of peace and order in the prison environment as long as coordination between prison leadership and the police in the region,” he said.

Imam Suyudi said it was implementing the joint request of kapolda to conduct a raid into the prison environment.
