KUCHING: Incessant rain caused 15 houses in Kampung Temaga Melayu along the Lundu- Sematan road to be flooded yesterday.

Village chief, Osman Ibrahim, said most of the houses that were flooded were single storey houses.

“The water started flowing into people’s houses at around 10am. The flash flood that reached about two feet receded around 1pm,” he said.

Kampung Temaga Melayu is located along a low-lying area and would be flooded after four to eight hours of high tide, Osman said.

Despite the flood, the affected villagers did not want to move because they expected the flood to recede fast.

Meanwhile, Civil Defence Force officer for Bau, Lundu and Sematan, Mackinly Jores, when contacted confirmed that the water level in the village receded around evening yesterday.

“Despite the low tide the situation is still at the alert level because the weather in Sematan is still expected to be rainy. No evacuation centres have been opened in the area (Sematan) to date, although there are people there already affected by the floods,” he said.

Apart from the 15 houses at Kampung Temaga Melayu, a house in Kampung Paon (also located along the Lundu/Sematan road) and two routes along the Lundu/Sematan road near SMK Lundu and Sungat Sebat bridge were also flooded under about two feet of water.

This made the routes impassable by vehicles until the water started to recede in the afternoon.
