KUCHING: Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng has managed to give out 1,000 bags of 10kg rice to needy households every month despite registering an annual deficit of RM600,000.

Its chairman Tay Boon Sin said the Home had been taking good care of 28 residents – 16 male and the rest female – besides the monthly contribution of rice.

“We give one to three bags of 10kg rice to 345 poor families on a monthly basis. In short, at least 1,000 bags of rice are required every month.

“We cannot thank our regular donors enough for without their generous contributions, Hun Nam Siang Tng won’t be able to come this far,” he told journalists after receiving 300 bags of 10kg rice and 300 boxes of biscuits from Harbour Music Cafe & KTV at the Home, off Jalan Sekama, here yesterday.

The company made the donations in conjunction with the recent Winter Solstice and Christmas celebrations.

On hand to present the donations was Harbour Music Cafe & KTV general manager John Ho while representatives of the company Meow Meow and Fei Fei received tokens of appreciation from Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng vice chairman Tay Swee Hock and its social welfare officer Penghulu Thian Sing Hwa respectively.

Boon Sin thanked Harbour Music Cafe & KTV for donating rice and biscuits to the Home while calling on other companies to follow suit.

According to him, Harbour Music Cafe & KTV donated more than 1,000 bags of 10kg rice to the Home last year alone, adding that the company had been reaching out to the Home since a couple of years ago.

“Not only has Harbour Music Cafe & KTV been giving us rice six to seven times a year, the proprietor has also donated RM30,000 to the construction of a new six-storey building.”

Boon Sin said the new building was recently completed and as of yesterday, the installation of CCTVs was underway.

On the distribution of rice, he said the Home would also help disaster victims if there was a need.

“Many fire and flood victims do ring us for help. Whenever such calls are received, we never fail to give out bags of rice to them. It is prudent to say that we need over 10,000 bags of rice every year to help the poor and those who are in need.”

As such, he expected that more corporations would emulate the kind gesture of Harbour Music Cafe & KTV in order to play their part in preserving a caring society.
