KUCHING: The High Court here yesterday dismissed an appeal by a man sentenced to seven years ’ jail and three lashes for a robbery committed two years ago.

The appellant, Marjorie Jampong, had his conviction imposed by the Sessions Court and affirmed by High Court judge Datuk Rhozariah Bujang.

Marjorie, 30, had pleaded guilty to robbing a woman at a house in Tabuan Jaya at 9am on Aug 12, 2015.

In delivering the verdict, Rhodzariah said the appellant had committed a very serious offence; that he broke into the house and threatened the complainant with a meat clever.

He also took away a handphone and an iPad from the table in the living room before he fled.

“The sentence of seven years and three strokes of the cane is not excessive due to the seriousness and rampancy of the offence,” she said.

The appellant was caught by a police team after he was tracked down with a device tracker.

It is said that he was playing with the iPad while waiting for a bus in the city with his 84-year-old mother.

He was arrested 45 minutes later following a police report lodged by the complainant.
