KUCHING: The New Year brought joy to Mohammad Yusri Mohd Yusuf as he is finally returning to school after being absent for a year due to financial difficulties, thanks to Santubong MP Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Mohammad Yusri, who will be studying at SMK Sri Matang, received the compassionate contribution in the form of school supplies from the Santubong MP’s parliamentary service centre.

Its coordinator Sarkan Piee who represented Wan Junaidi presented the contribution to Mohammad Yusri as the latter was brought to a supermarket to purchase all his schooling necessities.

Sarkan added that the school registration fee would also be covered by the service centre.

“The contribution is an initiative taken by Santubong MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar who is also the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, in the hope that such contributions would ease the burden of the underprivileged whenever schools reopen,” he said when met by reporters yesterday.

Mohammad Yusri was accompanied by his mother Mariani Abdullah and Yayasan Kemajuan Insan (Yakin) personnel Zamri Zaini and Norlian Noh.

Mohammad Yusri was forced to stop his Form 2 studies and hang up school bag last year to take care of his ailing father. He lives with his parents Mohd Yusuf Abdullah @ Segan, 66, and Mariani, 37, in a ramshackle house at Lorong No 1, Kampung Temedak, Jalan Matang.

Mohd Yusuf’s feet were amputated after he got infected with leptospirosis six years ago, and he has not been able to land a job since as none of the employers he approached wanted an elderly worker with disabilities.

As such, Mohammad Yusri’s family depends on the RM300 monthly assistance from the Social Welfare Department and his mother’s salary of RM900 as a janitor at Politeknik Matang to survive.

According Mohd Yusuf, there isn’t much money left after the compulsory salary deduction of his wife’s salary such as for Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and buying daily necessities.

Additionally, the family couldn’t afford the increasing expenses for school; hence, his son was absent from school throughout the year 2016.
