New year ‘bang’ for Chong with Megalanes top trophy

KUCHING: Former national youth bowler Chong Jun Foo got off to a good start in the new year when he was crowned champion of the 1st New Year Bowling Challenge at Megalanes Sarawak, Emart Batu Kawa, on Saturday.

The zero-handicapper Chong, who is also a former state Sukma bowler, felled a total of 1,827 pins with an average game of 228 pins to top the 72-competitor field.

Sukma young gun Musayyar Khalid, also playing with zero handicap, impressed with 1,779 pins to secure second place.

In third place 43 pins further back was another former national bowler Jonathan Ding Sagan while Hipni Morni (1,724 pinfalls) and Mohd Nur Syafiq Mohd Amran (1,719 pinfalls) finished fourth and fifth.

Chong collected RM2,000 while Musayyar received RM1,000 and Jonathan settled for RM500, along with trophies.

Chong and Musayyar each picked up another RM50 with Daniel Lim when they scored similar 278 pinfalls for the men’s high game (scratch).

The sixth to 10th finishers were Norhazaidi (1,712), Daniel Lim (1,696), Abang Madzian (1,695), Gordon Tsen (1,690) and Zaini Rawi (1,682).

Marzainah Jayamara was the women’s champion after registering 1,598 pinfalls while the women’s high game (scratch) was won by former national kegler Dayang Khairuniza Abang Jamalidon who scored 224 pinfalls.

For the Average 180 and below category, the the top three winners were Gordon Tsen, Peter Pu and Abang Rashidi respectively.

A special award in the form of a hamper was presented to the most senior bowler 76-year-old Alan Kiff.

Seventy-two bowlers turned up for the competition which was closed by Batu Kitang state assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman.

Also present were SUPP Batu Kitang youth chairman Alvin Chong and organising chairman Kevin Yeo.
