KOTA SAMARAHAN: The police have achieved their target under the National Key Results Area (NKRA) by reducing the district’s crime index by 5.92 per cent last year.

Samarahan District police chief DSP Lee Chong Chern said the achievement, which beat the five per cent target set at the start of the year, was due to collaboration between the police, local government, government agencies as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

“The crime index declined by 19 cases, or 5.92 per cent, which achieves the target set under NKRA of reducing crime by five per cent each year.

“Among the main contributors to the crime index are house break-ins during the day and night (40 cases), vehicle theft (seven), and causing hurt (seven),” he said during a monthly parade at the district police headquarters here yesterday.

Lee also revealed that police conducted 29 raids and arrested 43 individuals for illegal gambling activities such as illegal lottery and cyber gambling last year under Ops Dadu, seizing various gambling equipment and RM9,500 in cash in the process.

On drugs, he said the district had seen a rise in drug-related activities last year with 393 cases reported compared to 378 the previous year, with 420 persons detained for possessing and abusing drugs under Sections 15(1)(a) and 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He added that road fatalities in the district also saw an increase, with the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division recording 18 deaths from 884 road accidents in 2016 compared to 10 deaths from 827 cases in 2015.

Yesterday’s parade also saw Lee presenting commendation certificates to 12 officers and two rank-and-file personnel to acknowledge their excellent work.
