KUCHING: Pemanca Ko Wai Neng says Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg is a suitable candidate to succeed Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem as the next chief minister.

The Chinese community leader said Abang Johari, who is also Satok assemblyman, had been in touch with the Chinese community besides having provided financial assistance to Chinese schools in his constituency.

The two schools which had received allocations from Abang Johari were Chung Hua Middle School No 4 and Chung Hua Primary School No 4, Ko said in a phone interview yesterday.

“Datuk Amar Abang Johari is friendly and approachable. He has given money to Chinese schools in his constituency.”

Ko said not only had Abang Johari been helping in the development of Chinese education but the latter also did not shy away from other projects initiated by the Chinese community.

He believed that Abang Johari would continue to lend a hand to Chinese schools now that he is the chief minister.

He also hoped that Abang Johari would carry on the legacy of Adenan.

“The late Tan Sri Adenan Satem had implemented several policies many of which were not fully carried out. We hope that his successor will continue what Tan Sri Adenan had been doing.”

For instance, Ko said the new chief minister should table and pass a legislation in the State Legislative Assembly to implement systematic annual allocation to the 14 Chinese independent schools.

He hoped that Adenan’s successor would also reach out to mission schools in the state.

“We also hope the new chief minister would be more determined in enforcing the immigration rights of Sarawak.”
