TAWAU: A 31-year-old local man was killed when a Toyota Rav 4 he was driving collided with a three-tonne lorry at Batu 23, Jalan Apas here at about 3.50pm yesterday.

District police chief ACP Fadil bin Hj Marsus said it was raining when the fatal accident occurred.

He said the lorry, carrying fish tanks containing salted water, was on its way to Semporna from Tawau which suddenly skidded into the road divider on the opposite side.

Fadil said the lorry driver was trying to drive back to his path but collided with the oncoming Rav 4 from the opposite direction and crashed into back side of the lorry and skidded to the road shoulder.

The lorry then skidded and overturned into a ditch, he said.

The Rav 4’s driver was crushed and died in his vehicle while the 31-year-old lorry driver slightly injured.

“Initial investigation shws that this accident was caused by the lorry driver who failed to control his lorry.

“We will investigate this case under Section 41(1) of Road Transport Act 1987,” he added.
