KUCHING: Sarawakians are reminded to be alert as heavy rain is expected from Jan 17 to 19.

According to Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the information was based on report from the Malaysia Meteorological Department.

The heavy rain could be the result of the weak cold surges phenomenon and the formation of the Borneo vortex.

“Those living in western Sarawak and areas with poor drainage system should get ready for the possibility of flash floods during the period. Western Sarawak is one area that will experience flood, based on the rainfall information received from Met Malaysia.

“It will also depend on the pattern of the rainfall and other factors which can contribute to flood, such as king tides coupled with heavy rain,” he added.

Based on the Rainfall Outlook Model, Wan Junaidi said that Sarawak’s rainfall in January was expected to hit 2,940 mm.

The state is also expected to experience high tides from Jan 10 to 18 and Jan 27 to 31.

Thus, those people living in the low-lying areas and other areas prone to high tides, are advised to get ready for the possibility of flood during these times.

Wan Jinaidi told the press this during a working visit to SK Tanjung Bako yesterday.

State Education director Rakayah Madon, SK Tanjung Bako headmaster Tukimin Selikin and Tg Bako village head Rajidin Narawi were also present.
