LUNDU: The late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem liked to go down to the ground to observe and ensure that every development plan implemented in his constituency went smoothly for the benefit of the people.

Adenan, who was the State Assemblyman for Tanjong Datu, frequently spent time visiting the areas while fishing near the beach and rivers in the constituency which are rich in fish resources.

Recounting the interesting time he had with the late Chief Minister, the Penghulu of the Stunggang Melayu Zone in Lundu District, Ibrahim Suni, 68, said among the locations that Adenan liked were the Sematan beach, Telok Melano, Pulau Talang-Talang while for river fishing, he liked the Batang Kayan river.

Situated about 110 kilometers from Kuching, Lundu is located beside a river while Sematan is beside the sea. Both are in the Tanjong Datu state constituency.

Ibrahim, who knew the former Chief Minister for the past 11 years, said that Adenan also liked to read while fishing.

When asked about Adenan’s favourite location when returning to his constituency, Ibrahim said a coffeeshop in the town was his favoured joint to enjoy Laksa Sarawak.

“Whenever he went to Lundu, Adenan would frequent the Kedai Kopi Hasni Corner. He would go there to have Laksa Sarawak. In addition, he also liked a ‘cendol’ stall above Pasar Lundu,” he said.

Recalling the time he served under Adenan, Ibrahim said they had to be careful because he was very concerned about the wellbeing of the people like wanting every project to be implemented in the best manner possible.

“When returning to his constituency, he would visit the projects to see what had been implemented. He had also visited the projects without notification and if something had not been implemented, he would personally make a phone call to enquire why it had yet to be implemented.

“That’s why under Tok Nan’s administration we had to be careful because he was serious in the implementation of any project; there must not be any delay in the interest of the people,” Ibrahim said. — Bernama
