MIRI: People here are urged to keep the city clean to encourage visitors to revisit the city.

Tourism Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said it was important for people to keep the city clean especially at eateries, public toilets, walkway and recreational parks as Miri is the northern gateway for the tourists to enter Sarawak.

“Poor cleanliness at such places would only tarnish the image of Miri as a resort city,” he told the media while distributing mandarin oranges for the Chinese New Year to traders at the city’s business centre yesterday.

The Senadin assemblyman said many visitors particularly those from Peninsular Malaysia on working visits to Miri were impressed by Miri City Council’s (MCC) efforts in keeping the city clean. He said the people should share the responsibility.

“They can help keep the city clean by not throwing household garbage at illegal dump sites, keep their house compounds clean, and use public toilets responsibly. Business operators must keep their premises clean with attention given to hygienic food preparation.”

He hoped MCC would give bite to their effort through stricter enforcement. Earlier, Lee led the SUPP team in Miri to visit markets in the city centre to extend CNY greetings and distribute mandarin oranges to members of public, accompanied by Piasau Assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting and Miri Mayor Adam Yii.

The group visited Tamu Muhibbah and Tamu Kedayan followed by the Fish Market and Tua Pek Kong Temple, Central Market, Unity Food Stalls and Persiaran Kabor as the last stop.
