While New York may be famous for its style of pizza, one restaurant in the city has made itself stand out from the rest recently by offering a pie that caters to only a select few.

For 2,000 dollars, customers at Industry Kitchen can try the “24K,” a pizza topped with a laundry list of luxurious ingredients: truffles, Stilton cheese flown in from England, foie gras, caviar from the Caspian Sea, edible flowers and 24-karat gold leaves from Ecuador.

The restaurant, not surprisingly, is around the corner from Wall Street, New York’s famed financial district. Restaurant manager Aylon Hadar said he wanted to create a unique pizza befitting the area.

While a whole pie goes for 2,000 dollars, a slice will run you a (slightly) more manageable 250 dollars and a bite costs 50 dollars.

Since the pizza first appeared on the menu two months ago, fewer than 20 have been sold – the exact figure remains a restaurant secret.

But just because Industry Kitchen offers an expensive pizza doesn’t meant that it caters to only the upper crust – the rest of the items on the menu are relatively affordable for all diners, says Hadar.

Pizza is a relatively new entrant to the world of exorbitantly priced junk food which one can wolf down in New York: A gold-leaf-covered doughnut for 100 dollars, a margarita cocktail for 1,200 dollars and a hot dog for 2,300 dollars could all be found at one point in the Big Apple.

In case the price tag didn’t scare you away, the “24K” must be ordered two days ahead of time. Hadar compares eating the pizza to driving a Lamborghini: It’s a pleasure that only few can afford. – dpa
