LIMBANG: A crowd of over 1,500 braved the rain to give Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datin Amar Datuk Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang a rousing welcome upon their arrival at Limbang Airport yesterday.

The crowd was made of people from various racial and religious backgrounds, representatives of non-governmental organisations and political parties.

Yesterday was the first visit by the Limbang-born chief minister after his appointment as chief executive of the state on Jan 13 this year. The chief minister did away with formality when he stepped off the red carpet to shake hands with the people who lined up to greet him.

On hand to welcome him were Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Assistant Minister of Welfare and Community Wellbeing Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang, Limbang Resident Datu Maria Hasman and local community leaders.

The plane carrying the chief minister touched down at about noon just as it was about to drizzle. A ‘doa selamat’ was recited on the tarmac after the chief minister had alighted from the plane.

Limbang is the first destination of his ‘Meet-the-People’ gathering in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

Among those in his entourage were State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Gani and Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

They later visited the Chinese New Year open house of Temenggong Ang Kheng Su at Taman Bian where they were greeted with a lion dance and had lunch.
