KUCHING: Flora Fong Xin Jie capped a double success as her team the Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) captured five titles out of the 12 contested at the Sarawak Junior State Closed (1st Leg) Badminton championship at SBA Hall yesterday.

The Sukma shuttler and tournament top seed from Kuching beat Adrienne Chan Yi Ning of Miri LWS-SJS in straight sets of 21-9, 21-9 to lift the Girls U16 singles crown.

In joint third place were MBA-N’s Yong En En and Lloyderyena Xalfira Simon.

Fong teamed up with Lloyderyena to win the Girls U16 doubles title after topping the four-team league competition with six points from three wins.

Nik Azizi Murat of SBA also bagged two titles as he beat teammate Barrie Chong Kwang Wei 21-17, 21-19 in the Boys U16 singles and both ended up as doubles champions when they edged the joint third/fourth seeds Joden Atom and Riefhan Jawahweer (MBA-N) 21-19, 23-21.

Also showing promise in the SBA camp was Darrent Lim Lian Zhan who edged Frederick Thang Lie Yang (MBA-N) 24-22, 21-19 in the Boys U12 singles final.

His second title came from the doubles where he partnered Muhammad Iqbal Asyraaf (SBA) to beat Ayden Chua and Wislie Yap (KCH-BP) 21-18, 21-9.

Other SBA players who scored success by teaming up with players from other teams in the three-day competition organised by SBA were Kashley Kho Tze Yin (Girls U14 doubles) and Joshua Voon Ern Hua (Boys U14 doubles).

Meanwhile, CCY Kuching walked away with three titles where Pui Wee Young overcame Joshua Voon of SBA 21-9, 21-12 in the Boys U14 singles final, Brenda Lai beating Angel Chin Onn Qi (MBA-N) by three sets 14-21, 21-16, 21-18 in the Girls U12 singles final and the pair of Brenda Lai Qian Tung-Lee Zi Suen who beat SK’s Marilyn Wong Jier and Yung Siew Ying 21-15, 27-25 in the Girls U12 doubles final.

The main objective of the championship was to select players to represent Sarawak in the National Junior Circuit (1st Leg) Zone B from Mar 8-12 in Putrajaya, National Junior Circuit (2nd Leg) Zone B from May 17-21 in Sarawak and the Grand Finals in Terengganu from July 26-30.
