MIRI: Students are reminded to inculcate good character apart from acquiring knowledge and obtaining good examination results in order to ensure a bright future.

Chairman of SMK Chung Hua Miri board of director Tan Sri Datuk Paduka Chai Yu Lan gave the reminder during an Excellent Awards and Prize presentation ceremony at SMK Chung Hua Miri yesterday.

Her text of speech was read by her daughter Rita Ting.

Quoting Martin Luther King Jr – ‘The  function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. Intelligent plus character – that is the real goal of true education’, Chai said obtaining excellent result was not enough to shape one’s personality and character.

“Your true potential will only emerge when you work together with others and from there, you are able to become the better self,” she said.

Mascot of this year’s Chung Hua’s orientation week is Firefly, which Chai said was the best example which students should follow.

“Though they are small in size, firefly can illuminate brightly when they work together. Similarly, these are the fundamental elements that are vital in ensuring the continuity of Chung Hua’s achievement in academic, co-curricular, sports and above all, leadership,” she said.

The ceremony  was also attended by the school’s alumni president Lee Thin Hin; principal Wong King Kui, vice principals Lai Jia Ling, Anthony Raj; Johnattan James and Liew Sook Khim.

Meanwhile, Wong congratulated all the students who excelled in their UPSR, PBS and PT3 assessment for their effort and hard work.

A total of 27 students who obtained 8As and 7As (for SJK (C) schools); 6As and 5As (for SK schools) received awards and prizes from the school’s board.

“Recognising the achievements of these outstanding students is important to show them that their effort is made known to everyone. We also hope that it will encourage all students to do well in both academic and co-curricular activities; as these are essence to be well-balanced individual and to become a successful person who can help contribute to nation-building in future,” Wong added.
