KUCHING: Those going to cast their votes in the Tanjong Datu by-election this Saturday (Feb 18) may need to bring along their umbrellas as it is expected to rain that day.

The seven-day weather outlook released by the Malaysian Meteorological Department shows that Lundu District could experience showers throughout that day, with a possible thunderstorm in the afternoon.

The data also states that the district is expected to receive rain all week long.

“Except for Wednesday, the seven-day weather forecast indicates thunderstorms in the afternoon throughout the week (Feb 13-19).

“During this particular week, the temperature is estimated to read between 23ºC and 32ºC,” the department indicates on its official website www.met.gov.my.

Based on the forecast, only Thursday and Friday (Feb 16 and 17) are expected to receive no rain in the morning.

The Tanjong Datu by-election is called following the death of the state’s fifth chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who was the assemblyman, on Jan 11 this year.

His widow Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu has been chosen by PBB to contest under Barisan Nasional (BN) in the constituency.

She is facing Rapelson Richard Hamit of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru) and Johnny Aput of State Reform Party (STAR) in a three-cornered fight for the state seat.

In the state election last year, Adenan retained Tanjong Datu after garnering 6,360 votes against the 468 polled by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR)’s Jazolkipli Numan – earning Adenan the winning 5,892-majority.
