MARUDI: Works on the RM23-million waterfront project here will commence by the end of this year.

The proposed waterfront project, to be undertaken by Public Works Department (PWD), stretches from the government wharf to the Sarawak Rivers Board terminal office, covering a length of 300 metres to form part of the 7.6-acre Marudi Town Square Esplanade.

This will entail the demolition of two petrol stations and the Customs Department building.

The Baram river bank in front of Fort Hose will be reinforced with a retaining wall. Estimated to cost RM8 million, the tender for the project is expected to be done by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, the repair to Fort Hose, for which an allocation of RM3.5 million has been put aside, will be undertaken by the Museum Department.

Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, who is Marudi assemblyman, said this to reporters at a press conference after the presentation of Wang Ishan Tabung Bencana Agromakanan to farmers affected by flood at the Baram Civic Centre yesterday.

On another matter, he again appealed to the people of Marudi to be patient with the project to improve the Marudi-Miri Road and cautioned drivers to take extra care when using the road.

At the same time, he disclosed that an allocation of RM1 million had been approved for the building of a river retaining wall at Kampung Narum, down river from the town.

Present were Marudi district officer Mackos Sibong, Marudi District Council chairman Edward Mendai and Miri Division agriculture officer Albania Linus Lukong.
