Chinese youths wanted for TVet

MIRI: The Sarawak Skills Development Centre (PPKS) hopes to recruit more Chinese youth for technical vocational education and training (TVet) programmes.

PPKS Miri director John Rizal Biki said Chinese youths should utilise government-sponsored TVet courses.

“At this time we have received a grant to offer two programmes namely Apprenticeship Scheme for Mechatronics (SPM) and Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL).

“SPM is a PPKS collaboration between the Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF) and the industry in which students will be sponsored by selected companies for their chosen course,” he said during a meeting with the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) recently.

He explained for the RPEL programme, individuals with a minimum five years’ experience can apply to attain the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) or Malaysian Skills Diploma (DKM).

“This programme allows skilled workers to obtain recognised skills certificates from the Department of Skills Development (JPK) by simply providing a portfolio and evidence of competence in a particular field.

“In Miri, our RPEL provides registration for the Electrical, Mechatronics, Electronics Industry, Computer Systems, Office Management, and Graphic Design courses,” he said.

Meanwhile, MCCCI chairman Lee Khoi Yun hoped for more collaboration with PPKS.

“This is important so that we can pass on such information to encourage Chinese students to be involved with skills in addition to academics,” he said.
