MIRI: The crime index here records a year-on-year drop of 14 per cent, says Miri police chief ACP Khoo Leng Huat.

For the period from Jan 1 to Feb 18 this year, there were 153 cases reported versus 177 cases registered in the same period last year.

“Such success is achieved through the support and cooperation from all levels of society – members of the Miri City Council, community leaders, retired police personnel, the media and NGOs (non-governmental organisations),” he told reporters after the monthly police assembly at the central police station here yesterday.

Khoo added that apart from the focus on reducing crime rate in the city, police here had launched the ‘School Liaison Officer’ (PPS) programme on Jan 3 and the ‘Back to School’ programme on Jan 6, which involved 15 assistant police superintendents and 21 inspectors.

“This programme (PPS) is further enhanced through the participation of 105 sub-inspectors, sergeant majors, sergeants, corporals and lance-corporals.

“Under it, all PPS are placed at 21 secondary and 76 primary schools in and around Miri to help monitor and instil a sense of discipline in schoolchildren,” he said.

Earlier, Khoo presented excellence service awards to 62 senior police personnel The ceremony was witnessed by Miri deputy police chief Supt Stanley Ringgit, Miri Ex-Police Association chairman Han Hipni, Police Families Association (Perkep) Miri branch chairwoman Jasmine Low Chui Ying and local councillors.
