CMA Act 1998 being revised to include new elements

KUCHING: The Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 is currently being revised to achieve the digital nation status.

In a written response to The Borneo Post when asked on the matter, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said upon revision, several new elements would be incorporated into the Act.

“The Act is currently being revised to incorporate new elements, including network security matters,” it said, adding that the revision would help Malaysia achieve digital national status.

An announcement would be made soon.

On enforcement, MCMC said it had carried out various advocacy and awareness programmes aimed at different segments of society.

“The programmes aim to promote ethical and positive use of the Internet, educate Internet users about the importance of self-regulation, and also he role of the public in curbing the spread of false news.

“Web users are bound by the terms and conditions of services as stipulated by the respective social media platform providers such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Users can lodge to the social media platforms provided to report issues,” the statement said.

The nation is seeing an increasing Internet-related offences, particularly in the dissemination of fake or hoax news and as such, advocacy is very much needed to educate Internet users to be responsible online.
