LABUAN: Labuan folks received a ‘gift’ in the form of discounts and waiver on Labuan Corporation’s properties with immediate effect.

The relaxation from the Federal Territories Ministry was granted in view of the economic slowdown on the island.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, said his ministry had directed the Labuan Corporation to not impose rental on its sports facilities to ensure the sporting and recreational activities are uninterrupted, especially for youth.

He said rental for the corporation’s business premises like food and sundry kiosks for petty traders and land currently leased for oil and gas yards be reduced to a reasonable rate.

“We hope this gift will help ease the burden of the people here, especially the affected business community. We, in the government are not just sitting and watching the situation but finding ways and means to resolve people’s predicament,” he told reporters after officiating the Kenduri 1 Wilayah at the Lawn Bowl International Arena site here on Saturday.

He said the rebranded discount card for consumers in the federal territories on March 1, to purchase essential goods at low prices using ‘Kad Ceria Wilayah’ would also be extended to Labuan.

“We want to do all together, whatever we introduce for consumers in KL and Putrajaya, will be implemented in Labuan as well, same goes to the Labuan Umno Youth free fuel programme for motorcycles,” Tengku Adnan said.
