KLUANG: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) Kluang branch raided two companies here on suspicion of using unlicensed software to run their businesses.

The raids involved an engineering company on Feb 22 and an interior design company on Feb 23, which were located in Kluang Industrial Area and Kluang town centre.

KPDNKK Kluang branch chief, Abdul Wahid Ahmad said the raids were conducted following complaints from Business Software Alliance (BSA), which is the leading advocate for the global software industry.

He said the suspected pirated software found were those belonging to Adobe, Autodesk and Solidworks, all members of BSA.

“Two computers and five software worth RM166,000 were seized in the first raid, while in the second raid, a computer with three software are also confiscated and estimated at RM41,000,” he told reporters, here yesterday.

Abdul Wahid said it did not make any arrests but both companies were not allowed to continue using the software.

“We are still investigating the date when the two companies started using the software involved,” he said.

He added the cases were being investigated under Section 41 (1) (d) of the Copyright Act 1987 which carries a fine of between RM2,000 and RM20,000 for each illegal copy or up to five years’ jail upon conviction. — Bernama
