Terengganu lift TNB Cup for fifth time

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) emerged as champions of the TNB Cup for the fifth consecutive time at Tun Razak Hockey Stadium here, Sunday night.

In the final, THT scored a narrow 5-4 win over the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) via penalty flicks after both teams were tied 4-4 in regulation time.

KLHC led 3-1 at one stage. Their German player, Anton Poul Fritz Ebeling scored in the 9th and 25th minutes, each via field goal and a penalty corner.

The other goal was scored by Muhammad Razie Abdul Rahim via a penalty corner in the 19th minute.

THT’s first goal was by South Korean, Jang Jonghyun in the 12th min via a penalty corner.

Stung by KLHC’s third goal, THT retaliated and scored in the 35th and 49th minute via penalty corners by Jang Jonghyun.

The competition became very stiff with both teams exchanging raids and in the 53rd minute, KLHC was handed a penalty, which Mohd Syamim Mohd Yusof calmly slotted in to give KLHC its fourth goal.

Just as victory seemed to belong to KLHC, Nicolas Enrique Della Torre became THT’s saviour when he equalised with a field goal in the final minutes of the match.

In the meantime, THT’s head coach, Sarbit Singh said he was very satisfied with his players and happy to be able to defend the title.

“They played their hearts out to defend the TNB Cup. Although, they we trailed, the players exhibited a high fighting spirit and did not give up,” he told reporters after the match. The KLHC and THT teams had to share the cash price of RM80,000 since the m atch tied 4-4 in regulation time. — Bernama
