KOTA KINABALU: Art is not as cheap as some people may think. You have to invest to get what you want, according to aspiring local band, Chugs On Deck (COD).

The band’s lead singer, 27-year-old Effendy Jaman, said the path to being a musician is not always easy.

The band had faced numerous challenges, such as the lack of support from their loved ones and financial issues, he said during the launch of the band’s latest music video for its newest single entitled Kotak Cahaya.

However, Effendy said that the band had been doing well so far.

He took note of some of the prestigious music festivals that his band had taken part in, such as the Northern Music Festival and the NegaRAKU Music Festival.

Ever since the band’s inception in 2014, the band has played alongside various local household names in the music industry and they have been invited to play in West Malaysia twice.

In explaining the musical genre of Chugs on Deck, Effendy stated that his band offers a mixture of Pop-Punk and Hardcore elements, which can be classified as Easycore.

Effendy added that as of now, they are the only band in Sabah that plays this kind of genre.

When asked about the band’s future plans, Effendy stated that his band wants to focus more on writing and therefore they might have to cut down on playing live shows.

Chugs On Deck is also expected to release another Malay single in the next three to four months and is planning to release an extended play (EP) in the near future.

The band hosted a special music video party for Kotak Cahaya at Ensera, Lorong Dewan yesterday and it featured an acoustic performance from them.

According to Effendy, the music video for Kotak Cahaya serves as a metaphor for ‘thinking outside the box’.

He said the music video was shot entirely in Sabah and it only had a budget of less than RM1,000.             The whole music video was produced and directed by local Sabahan talents.
