SIBU: Nine teams will slug it out for the Sibu Closed Rugby 7-a-side crown which begins today at SMK Sacred Heart.

They are Borneo Wanderers, Sibu Swan, Goldies Rugby, Panther Old Boys, Rugby Excellent Centre, Sacred Heart A and B and Kolej Vokasional A and B.

The championship is organised by Sibu Division Rugby Union (SDRU).

SDRU chief coach Michael Ting said Sibu Swan are the clear favourites, though Borneo Wanderers can also pose stiff challenge.

Ting said the championship was also a platform to tap potential players for the 2018 Sukma as the 7-a-side rugby would be included for the first time.

As such, he reminded the players from the Rugby Excellent Centre to showcase their power and will in order to win the selection.

“This is a chance for you to earn selection. Train hard and play a good game and there is every possibility that you will be the player that we are looking for.”

Ting said Sarawak is still weak in rugby based on past performance.

“However, we do hope that the players who take part will play well and win the selection exercise.”
