Cops detain 13 people involved in stealing e-components from telcos

KOTA KINABALU: Police arrested 13 individuals including a woman, believed to be involved in stealing electronic components owned by telecommunications companies at transmitter stations, in Jalan Bukit Padang and Jalan Kauluan Tuaran near here recently.

Sabah CID chief Datuk Salehuddin Abd Rahman said following a report on the theft of electronic components from the Jalan Bukit Padang Transmitter Station on Friday, a team from the Kota Kinabalu district police headquarters commenced investigations and the gathering of evidence.

“As a result of the investigations, police arrested five men in Putatan, Kinarut, Tenom and Keningau on Friday and Saturday. Police also seized 27 car batteries, wire cutting equipment and two cars,” he told reporters here yesterday.

He said three of the suspects, aged between 18 and 49, tested positive for drugs and all of them would be remanded for four days.

Salehuddin said a police team from the Tuaran IPD also arrested six men, aged 25 to 35, for their alleged involvement in the theft of electronic components from two telecommunication companies at the Jalan Kauluan Tuaran Transmitter Station.

“Acting on a report lodged on Feb 13, police launched a number of stake-outs and arrested six suspects at an unnumbered house in the Telipok settlement scheme at about 3am on Saturday.

“Also seized in the raid were several rolls of empty cables belonging to Telekom, believed to be related to the theft, and all suspects were remanded for four days and investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code,” he said.

Salehuddin said based on information from the interrogation, police also arrested a couple, aged 30 and 40 respectively, who are the owners of a scrap metal premises at Jalan Bantayan Inanam around 4pm yesterday.

“They were detained for investigations related to the case and police also seized 55 car batteries from the premises,” he added. — Bernama
