KUCHING: A proposal will be tabled to the state government to support the plan to send Sarawak students on a study trip to Japan to give them exposure to Japanese culture and the country’s technological advancement.

Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang said Japan being a well developed country with a high standard of living makes it one of the best destinations for Sarawak students to gain first-hand exposure to life outside Malaysia.

“I hope that the state government will take it (proposal) up. I will speak about that,” said Idris at ceremony to welcome a group of 12 students from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies at the PBB Muara Tuang service centre in Matang Jaya here yesterday.

He said he would try to get the right people and the right funding to make the proposal, which was mooted by Unimas lecturer Associate Prof Dr Jeniri Amir, a reality.

Idris said he would get the ball rolling by short listing deserving students in his constituency, be they from universities, colleges or secondary schools.

“The selected students must fit the criteria and are able to share what they have learnt and experienced in Japan with their peers in Sarawak,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Japanese students were led by their visiting professor Faridah Mohamad who has spent 30 years in Japan.

Faridah said the students who arrived in the state on Monday would be in Sarawak for a week and would be visiting places such as the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Jong’s Crocodile Farm and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.
